From Our Clinic to Her Heart: A Napa Humane Adoption Story

How one Napa Humane veterinary technician found family in the shelter animals she helped care for.
Every animal who comes through Napa Humane’s clinic has a story. Some are timid, some are playful, and others are still learning to trust the world around them. While we may never know everything about their past, we have an important role in helping prepare them for what comes next.
Through our partnership with Napa County Animal Shelter (NCAS), Napa Humane provides essential spay and neuter services that help shelter animals take the next step toward adoption.
For Jeni, Napa Humane’s Lead Registered Veterinary Technician, that work has become especially personal. Over the years, Jeni has helped care for countless shelter animals passing through our clinic. But a few special patients made a lasting impression. Today, four of the five pets in her home were adopted from NCAS after coming through Napa Humane for their spay or neuter procedures.
And each has a story worth sharing.
Two Kittens, One Unexpected Decision: Cinnamon Toast & Sugar
In November 2022, Jeni and her family were ready to welcome a kitten into their home. When two kittens arrived at Napa Humane on consecutive days, Jeni immediately fell for both.
There was Cinnamon Toast, affectionately known as Toasty, a playful tabby with incredibly soft fur. And Sugar, a beautiful white kitten with striking blue eyes and a calm, gentle personality.
Unable to decide which kitten would be the better fit, Jeni and her family planned a visit to Napa County Animal Shelter after Thanksgiving weekend to meet them both.
At first, Sugar seemed like the obvious choice. Her relaxed personality made her a natural fit for the family’s children. But just as they were preparing to adopt her, Jeni’s husband had a change of heart.
Toasty reminded him of a beloved childhood cat, and he couldn’t imagine leaving her behind. So instead of one kitten, they went home with two!
Today, Sugar rules the household with quiet confidence, even keeping the family’s much larger dog in line. Toasty, meanwhile, is a classic cat: affectionate one moment, darting away the next, and happiest curled up under a blanket or tucked into a cozy box. Although they aren’t biological sisters, they’ve grown up together as if they were always meant to be.
A Name That Felt Like Fate: Azura
When Azura arrived at Napa Humane in March 2025 for her spay procedure, something about her immediately caught Jeni’s attention.
Less than a year old, Azura had beautiful blue eyes, fresh scars across her face, and a timid demeanor that suggested she had experienced some difficult moments. Yet despite her shyness, she was remarkably affectionate.
Jeni and her family had been considering adopting a dog for months but hadn’t found the right match. Then came Azura.
Even her name felt like a connection. As a child, Jeni had a cat named Korrie Azura, and she hadn’t heard the name again until that day.
As Jeni cared for Azura, she found herself growing more attached to the gentle young dog. She sent photos to her husband throughout the day, and he was just as taken with her.
The next morning, the family arrived at Napa County Animal Shelter as soon as it opened, eager to meet her. With help from shelter staff, they made sure Azura would be comfortable around cats, an important consideration in Jeni’s already feline-filled household. She passed the introduction with flying colors. And just like that, Azura had a new home.
Today, affectionately called Azzy, she’s the loyal, gentle companion the family had hoped for. She adores the children, gets along beautifully with the cats, loves a good game of tug-of-war, and will do just about anything for a taste of peanut butter. The once-timid shelter dog is now a cherished member of the family.
A New Friendship, Right When It Was Needed: Lychee & Saja
Sometimes, welcoming a new pet into the family brings an unexpected kind of comfort.
When Jeni’s beloved 16-year-old cat, Baby Bear, passed away, the loss was felt throughout the household, especially by another cat named Saja.
Saja had originally come to Napa Humane through a community cat trap-neuter-return effort. But because of a deformity affecting his back legs, it became clear that returning him outdoors might not be the safest option. With the trapper’s blessing, Jeni welcomed Saja into her home.
Initially shy, Saja slowly began to trust his new surroundings and formed an especially close bond with Baby Bear. The two became inseparable companions. After Baby Bear’s passing, Saja seemed lost without his friend.
Then, a few weeks later, a tiny lynx-point kitten named Lychee arrived from Napa County Animal Shelter for her spay procedure alongside her sister.
Jeni noticed the curious little kitten and wondered whether she might be just what Saja needed. She brought Lychee home that very day after adopting her through NCAS.
Unlike Saja, who had needed time to adjust, Lychee made herself comfortable almost immediately. Full of personality, curiosity, and just the right amount of sass, she quickly won over the household. Most importantly, she and Saja became best friends.
These days, the two can often be found cuddling or playing together. Lychee also keeps busy following Toasty and Sugar around and playfully teasing Azzy.
She couldn’t replace Baby Bear, nor was she meant to. But she brought new companionship and joy into a home that had been grieving. And for Saja, she brought the gift of friendship once again.
Every Animal Deserves a Chance
Every animal who comes through our doors deserves the opportunity for a healthy future. That’s one reason our partnership with Napa County Animal Shelter is so important.
Spaying and neutering may be just one step in a shelter animal’s journey, but it’s an essential one. By providing these veterinary services, Napa Humane helps support their health and readiness for adoption, giving them the opportunity to begin their next chapter.
Jeni’s family offers a wonderful glimpse of what that next chapter can look like. Two kittens who found a home together. A timid young dog who became a beloved family companion. A tiny kitten who brought friendship back into another cat’s life.
Different beginnings. Different personalities. And each given the chance to become part of a loving family.
It’s a reminder that the Power of Prevention reaches far beyond the walls of our clinic. Through the combined efforts of our veterinary team, shelter partners, adopters, and community supporters, we’re helping create healthier futures for animals throughout Napa County.
Because behind every spay or neuter procedure is an animal with a story still waiting to unfold.
