Gentle Giants, Big Impact: Shadow’s Story

In the first six months of 2026, Napa Humane has performed 1822 affordable spay and neuter surgeries, of which 60 were large dogs: 38 males and 22 females.

Each surgery represents more than a routine procedure. It is an investment in healthier pets, stronger families, and a community working together to prevent pet overpopulation.

And sometimes, a routine surgery becomes something more.

Meet Shadow

Shadow is an 8-month-old Cane Corso with a big presence and an even sweeter personality. This gentle giant came to Napa Humane for what his family expected to be a routine neuter.

During his pre-surgical examination, however, our veterinary team discovered that Shadow had a hernia.

Fortunately, our medical team was able to repair the hernia during the same procedure, sparing Shadow and his family the stress and expense of another surgery.

Shadow’s family made the thoughtful decision to have him neutered while he was still young after planning for his care with their veterinarian.

For Shadow, preventive care also provided an opportunity to identify and address another medical need along the way.

Big Dogs Require Big Resources

There is a little more involved when your patient is a gentle giant.

Large-dog surgeries often require additional staff members to safely lift and position patients, larger doses of anesthesia and pain medication, bigger warming blankets and, yes, a few extra snuggles to help them feel comfortable as they recover.

Those additional needs are one reason large-breed spay and neuter procedures can cost significantly more at full-service veterinary hospitals.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, Napa Humane is able to subsidize these surgeries and keep them affordable for families who might otherwise have to postpone or forgo this important care.

And whether a family pays full price or receives financial assistance, every patient receives the same exceptional care. Our veterinary team treats every animal with the compassion, attention and respect we would want for our own pets.

The Ripple Effect of Affordable Care

The impact of affordable spay and neuter care extends far beyond a single surgery.

It helps prevent unplanned litters before they happen. It supports families in keeping beloved pets healthy and in the homes that love them. And it helps reduce the number of animals who may eventually enter local shelters.

That is Napa Humane’s Power of Prevention in action: addressing challenges before they become crises and helping create a healthier community for pets and the people who love them.

Shadow is just one of the 60 large dogs we’ve had the privilege of caring for over the past six months, but he reminded us that every patient who walks through our doors has a story.

Sometimes it’s a routine surgery. Sometimes it’s an unexpected hernia repair. But every pet, big or small, represents a family who loves them and a chance to make a lasting difference.

Because of our supporters, gentle giants like Shadow can receive the care they deserve. Together, we are building a healthier future for Napa County’s pets, one patient at a time.
